Bring color to your show place
One of the things we enjoy about helping homeowners is making their home a show place again. Too often, things like broken railings, loose shingles and siding, and a variety of 'small jobs' ALL add up to make a house look worn and outdated. And yet, it is SO easy to give a home a facelift with the many colorful products that are available today.
When a new and modern color siding is combined with a fresh set of colored shingles, a colorful fiberglass deck and artfully designed railings, a home either returns to its former glory or becomes a new show place on the block. Color and style should be a part of any home owner's property.
Giving a house a facelift gives it new value on the market and sets it apart from the rest of the neighborhood. Manufacturers have never offered such an array of colors, and many homeowners are combining them for fantastic results.
So try something different when you consider upgrading the look of your home. At Madera and Sons we are experts in giving your home the distinct look it deserves.
We are experts in roof repair, siding and fiberglass decks in New Jersey and Pennsylvania including Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate, Longport and Philadelphia.
Check out these colors at this festive time of year.

Up on the housetop.
You might not know it, but Santa Claus is coming to town! Well, pretty much everyone knows that and whether or not you believe it is up to you. For many, Santa symbolizes the symbol of giving at the holiday season, and for others he is the symbol of commercialism and everything that is wrong with the season.
One thing we know is that Santa plans land his sleigh on the rooftop before making his way down the chimney. He is not going to like tripping over loose shingles or flash!
Meanwhile, Madera and Sons Roofing can make sure your roof is in tip top condition whether you live at the Jersey Shore or Philadelphia. And don't worry about the cold! Just like Santa, we have our thermal underwear ready for the worst winter days. We give free estimates and offer special discounts every day. Call us for details and we will see you right away.
Thanks and here is a classic holiday song to get you in the spirit! Feel free to sing along!

Watch for danger signs of roof collapse
You read about it in the papers and see it on television all the time – ROOF COLLAPSE. Often, a roof will collapse in the process of building it, when the support is not complete and the weight of materials and workers becomes a problem. But more often then not, we find roof collapse on the eastern seaboard as a result of wind, water and snow.
This calamity can become deadly! In a recent incident from December of last year, heavy snow from a blizzard caused the roof and east wall of a Neptune City commercial building to collapse, leading to a gas line rupture. The building at 90 Route 35 housed an auto repair shop for the First Student bus company, which provides transportation for area schools.
It makes sense that the roof of a commercial building can eventually hold enough snow to collapse. There are many shopping centers and department stores in areas where heavy snow is an issue, that the support is so well-made that small snow plows can drive on them.
If you own a commercial location, then you owe it to yourself and your employees to have the roof inspected and any issues resolved before the winter is upon us. Commercial roofing is our specialty and we have many happy customers in Philadelphia, South Jersey and the surrounding area.
The following are some of the symptoms that have been reported prior to roof failure:
1. Sagging roof steel visually deformed
2. Cracked or split wood members
3. Sprinkler heads pushed down below ceiling tiles
4. Doors that pop open
5. Doors or windows that are difficult to open
6. Bowed utility pipes or conduit attached at ceiling
7. Creaking, cracking or popping sounds
Call Madera and Sons to protect your investment and keep the roof over your head. We also specialize in fiberglass roofing and decks in Philadelphia, South Jersey and the surrounding area.

Commercial roofing experts in Atlantic City, Philadelphia and all of South Jersey
We are very proud of the many commercial roofing and fiberglass projects that we work on in South Jersey, Philadelphia and the surrounding area. We help businesses keep a roof over their heads and provide them the protection they need for their investment.
Have you ever walked into a restaurant where the roof leaks and the tables have been rearranged to accommodate the buckets catching the rain water? It happens a lot in our shore towns, where wind and rain can be a daily occurrence. A strong and leak-proof roof is a must for a successful restaurant.
One of our most recent jobs was the all new Reddings in Atlantic City. This busy restaurant has earned a reputation as a one-of-a-kind establishment that is family friendly and conveniently located in Atlantic City. We quickly and efficiently repaired the roof after years of neglect and as part of a total rehabilitation of the building. It was a great success and the restaurant opened on schedule.
So please consider Madera and Sons for commercial roofing in Atlantic City, Philadelphia and all of South Jersey. Check out our Gallery for more photos of jobs in the area and remember that you should always get a quote from Madera and Sons for any roofing or fiberglass project, big or small.

What a weekend!
WOW! It was unseasonably warm this weekend at the Jersey Shore. With temperatures in the 80s, it is easy to forget that winter is coming. And while many of us would rather be sipping hot chocolate then applying sun screen, it was nice while it lasted.

Last week, we outlined some of the basics of getting winterized. This week, we offer a link to a comprehensive eBook that is available from ePub. CLICK HERE TO READ THIS INFORMATIVE BOOK.

Have you felt the chill...?
Have you finally felt the chill? The cold of winter is quickly approaching and it is time to get ready for the weather ahead.
If you need help, call Madera and Sons. In the meantime, you can begin home winterization with some easy-to-follow guidelines.
Check the exterior, doors and windows, looking for cracks and exposed entry points where cold air gets in. Those holes need to be sealed or your heating dollars are going to waste. Use weatherstripping around doors to prevent cold air from entering the home and caulk the windows.
Replace cracked glass in windows and, if you end up replacing the entire window, prime and paint all of the exposed wood. If your home has a basement, consider protecting its window wells by covering them with plastic shields. Replace any broken windows and now is a good time to install your storm windows.
Adding extra insulation to the attic helps to prevent warm air from escaping to your roof and causing ice dams. Check flashing to ensure water cannot enter the home and replace worn roof shingles or tiles.
Clean out your gutters and use a hose to spray water down the downspouts to clear away debris. You can also consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home.

Use Timberline by GAF
Well the votes have been tabulated and Timberline Lifetime Shingles from GAF have become the first choice of homeowners for shingles. No one makes a better shingle when it comes to toughness, adhesion, wind uplift resistance, flexibility and fire resistance. The company continues to upgrade its warranties in an effort to exceed any competitor's coverage.
In fact, many of the laminated shingles now have a lifetime warranty, the first warranty of its kind in the roofing industry. Why settle for anything less?
High winds are not just a problem at the Jersey Shore . It is estimated that wind damage to roofs results in nearly one billion dollars a year in insurance claims and repairs. But GAF shingles are so wind resistent that they pass the industry's two toughest tests including Class F 110 mph winds and Class H 150 mph winds. And when it comes to hurricanes and tornadoes that cause more than $6 Billion each year in propert damage, you need all the protection you can get.
When you install GAF products, you are getting the very best combination of weight and performance that modern manufacturing technology can deliver. Trust Madera and Sons to do the installation right and bring a lifetime of protection to your home.

Talk about raising the roof!
It has been so busy this summer that we have had a hard time following up on some of the stories we love. And whether you are a sports fan or not, you may recall the startling video that showed the Metrodome roof collapsing under the weight of snow in December 2010. WOW!
Well back in July, the new roof was inflated and the Metrodome is back in business after a $23 million repair. Sports fans will be able to return to their beloved stadium. At the time that the dome was re-constructed, the players were still in a dispute, but it now looks like the season will proceed as usual.
One terrific thing about this development is that the new dome is not a simple replacement, but a high tech improvement over the last version. According to an article on MPRnews.com, " It has a new generation of fiberglass and teflon fabric, and the center sections have been reconfigured: they have extra gussets that make them stronger, Maki said. They also have a lower, flatter profile that will make them less susceptible to wind and help keep snow from piling in drifts along the seams between roof panels."
So way to go, Metrodome! A little thing like high wind and tons of snow should not affect anyone, let alone a multi-million dollar sports complex. But it is a fact of life that extreme weather is a concern for everyone. Another winter is on its way, so a home inspection may be in order. Call us today for an appointment.

Goodnight Hurricane Irene...
Hurricane Irene has come and gone at the Jersey Shore and beyond. We spent a lot of time doing as much as we could to help homeowners battle the storm. Thanks to all who turned to us to provide last minute services like boarding up windows and stretching tarps. We were glad to help!
If you watched any of the dramatic footage from the Carolina coasts, you saw that the first thing to go in the storm was roof shingles. The news reporters focused their cameras on the roof tops and waited. At first, shingles were flapping in the wind, and when the storm came ashore, entire sections of shingles were ripping off and flying away.
And while many of the upcoming repairs at the Jersey Shore and Philadelphia will be simple, it is a good time to check for other structural damage to the roof including cracks or rotting wood. Gutters should also be checked to make sure they have not been loosened and will fall at a later date, as well as chimneys, vents and windows. A post-storm check of your building is an essential step to peace of mind.
You may also want to consider replacing your old roof now to protect your investment before the next storm lands.
Thanks again to all who called us to prepare for Hurricane Irene at the Jersey Shore . Please remember that we are standing by to help if you experienced any damage during the storm, or want an estimate on a new roof. In the meantime, here's Willie Nelson with his rendition of the classic Goodnight Irene, Enjoy!

Beware rip off roofers!
One of the biggest problems that we see at Madera and Sons is roofers who did such a terrible job that we are called to come in and fix the problems. We have heard all kinds of horror stories from our customers including contractors who switched to inferior grade materials after the contract was signed, to problems that occurred after the new roof was installed such as leaks in walls and basements. We have even heard about roofing contractors who cause damage to a roof to convince customers that work is needed.
Often, the contractors will try to defend themselves by saying 'You just can't please everyone.' But we believe that you can! And there are plenty of things you can do to make sure that you are going to get the services you really need.
The first thing you should do is request multiple bids for the work. We are happy to inspect your roof and provide you with an accurate estimate, and encourage you to find other contractors who will do the same. Since most contractors can purchase materials for the same cost, and the cost of labor is generally the same, you will need to be wary of bids that come in too high or too low compared to the majority of estimates. Too low and you may be buying shoddy materials. Too high and you may be getting ripped off for labor charges that are unwarranted.
Ask for credentials, proof of insurance and references. Qualified contractors are happy to offer these for your review.
And beware of storm chasers! Often, after storms come through an area and cause normal damage, roofers will be out in force offering free inspections or pointing out problems that don't even exist. These people will take advantage of a homeowner's fear.
At Madera and Sons, we pride ourselves on our many happy customers. We have the credentials to prove we are the best and the testimonials to show that our customers rely on us to do the job right. Whether you need a roof or fiberglass deck in South Jersey including Atlantic City , Margate , Ventnor, Longport or Ocean City , or Philadelphia and the surrounding area, we can help.

This means having the supplies you need in case of emergency and being prepared. You can find some important information on getting an emergency kit together at the Ready America web site when you click here.

Happy customers in South Jersey and Philadelphia
One of the best ways to rate a contractor comes from what their customers are saying. At Madera and Sons, we pride ourselves on the number of qualified referrals we receive from happy customers in South Jersey and Phildelphia, too.
It's easy to spend money and publicize that you are the best. Many businesses buy large display ads and pay for search engine links because they are not getting the kind of satisfied customer referrals that we receive. And SURE - we advertise, too! Quality advertising is a necessity in this competitive market. Many people in South Jersey know us from the signs they see in their neighborhood, or from seeing our trucks on the job site. But propects in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas are still learning about us.
So it is great to be able to publish a glowing testimonial from a happy customer. We will continue to publish these as we receive them and THANKS to all our happy customers.
"Thank you for your excellent service. We are extremely pleased with your workmanship and how well you cleaned up. Your men were terrific. We appreciate working with you and will recommend you anytime."

An ounce of prevention.
The weather man says this is going to be one of the worst storm seasons we have experienced due to the ocean temperatures being so high. Now is a good time to inspect your roof for the upcoming hurricane season as we have already seen tropical storms making their way up the coast. Following a strong wind storm, it is crucial for homeowners to inspect roof for damage. Finding even minor damage to shingles and other roof components can save major problems in the future.
Even minor failures in roof components will leave your home unprotected from the elements, leading to costly repairs from water damage, mold and rot.
Even if you aren't a home repair expert or have the physical ability to climb up on your roof, there are some obvious signs that your roof has sustained damaged that may be visible from the ground. As a homeowner, spotting these irregularities quickly and reporting them to your home repair service like StormPro USA can often result in a simple repair. Or in cases where the weather event has significantly damaged the roof, can substantiate an insurance claim for a replacement roof.
Many areas in the US experience winds in excess of 50 miles per hour throughout the year and it is possible that your roof has sustained some damage. If you would like Madera and Sons to help, we offer free estimates on all roofing and repair projects. Talk to an expert to protect your asset.

How to choose a roofing contractor
The internet is a fantastic resource for finding a contractor, offering great advice and up to date information on new processes and materials. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) has a great site filled with important information that you can use when choosing a contractor. They talk about the process of roof repair, the materials and what to look for in a contractor. Here are just some of the questions and answers they present on their informative site.
Q: What are my options if I decide to reroof?
A: You have two basic options: You can choose a complete replacement of the roof system, involving a tear-off of your existing roof system, or re-cover the existing roof system, involving only the installation of a new roof system. If you've already had one re-cover installed on your original roof system, check with a professional roofing contractor. In many instances, building code requirements allow no more than one roof system re-cover before a complete replacement is necessary.
Q: My roof leaks. Do I need to have it replaced completely?
A: Not necessarily. Leaks can result from flashings that have come loose or a section of the roof system being damaged. A complete roof system failure, however, generally is irreversible and a result of improper installation or choice of materials or the roof system installation is inappropriate for the home or building.
Q: Can I do the work myself?
A: Most work should not be done yourself. Professional roofing contractors are trained to safely and efficiently repair or replace roof systems. You can damage your roof system by using improper roofing techniques and severely injure yourself by falling off or through the roof.
Maintenance performed by home and building owners should be confined to inspecting roof systems during the fall and spring to check for cracked or curling shingles and cleaning gutters filled with dead leaves and other debris. If you must inspect your roof system yourself, use a firmly braced or tied-off ladder equipped with rubber safety feet. Wear rubber-soled shoes and stay on the ladder (and off the roof system), if possible.
Q: How long can I expect my roof system to last?
A: Most new roof systems are designed to provide useful service for about 20 years. Some roof system types, such as slate, clay tile and certain metal (e.g., copper) systems, can last longer.
Actual roof system life span is determined by a number of factors, including local climatic and environmental conditions, proper building and roof system design, material quality and suitability, proper application and adequate roof maintenance.
Roofing product manufacturers offer a variety of warranties on their products. Take a close look at those warranties to see what responsibilities and financial obligations manufacturers will assume if their products fail to reach their expected lives.

We are experts in historic preservation
One of our specialties is working with architects and city planners to repair and restore roofs on historical buildings. It takes an expertise in this area to get the job done right, as many historical buildings are in such a state of disrepair to begin with. We see many problems such as the deterioration of wooden shingles, damage from storms and falling trees and the results of years of neglect.
Many times, we cannot even walk on these roofs as this will cause additional damage to the building. Not only do we have to match materials, but also building styles. While new and improved materials and installation techniques could benefit these buildings, the emphasis is on historical accuracy and returning the building to its former glory.
These buildings may also require decorative elements that are no longer used in today's buildings. Each project presents its own set of unique problems and needs.
Often, through photographic evidence and research, we discover that the current roof was actually a replacement that was not done properly. That is why we work so closely with the project manager and architect to insure that we are doing the job right.
Sometimes, new materials can be used, although they may be specially hand cut to reproduce an early style. But whatever the project involves, we recommend that Madera and Sons be a part of the team from the beginning. We will work with the preservation architect to specify materials and construction techniques that will best preserve the roof's historic appearance. We are knowledgeable in traditional craft practices and will also help to maintain the finished project.
Whether you have a historic renovation or just need a quality roof installed on your property, consider Madera and Sons in Ventnor, NJ. We have excellent referrals from Cape May to Philadelphia, and everywhere in between. Look for our signs at current job sites and call us for a free estimate.

From the Desk of the Manager
Anyone who has had their roof repaired or replaced knows that it means a lot more than nailing down some shingles and hoping for the best. Your roof is a structural system that includes the framing, underlayment, flashing, cornices and fascia, ventilation, shingles, gutters and the knowledge to put it all together right. So it pays to find a roofer who is an expert in all these areas, and who is a trained professional with years of experience.
It also pays to find local contractors who take pride in their work. If you have watched television lately, you can see the problems that incompetetant workers can cause. A roof that has not been installed properly can cause all types of problems from structural damage, to water damage and mold. A professional roofer spares no effort to determine how to best serve their customer. Whether this means recommending certain materials, creating custom solutions or just being there after the sale, Madera and Sons can help.
Look for our signs in the area. Talk to our customers! We are the experts in roofing, siding and fiberglass in Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate, Longport, Ocean City, Strathmere, Stone Harbor, Avalon, Cape May and Philadelphia. Our work is top-notch and we take pride in the fact that we have been successful for 20 years.
As the next generations of roofers join our company, they will be trained in the newest roofing solutions and products. And despite the fact that the materials are more high-tech then ever before, it still takes physical labor and a great work ethic to install the job.

Holy Hurricanes! Check out this video!
You will not believe this video and the lengths that our manufacturers will go to to prove that they are the leaders in the field. This video shows the effects of gale force winds and torrential downpours to demostrate the power of their products. Many property owners take things like shingles for granted - but not the manufacturer! Check out the video and see what we mean. (And turn up the volume for full effect.)
